With a dramatic roll of distant thunder, a bagpipe fanfare and a spectacular display of fireworks, River Run Centre was declared officially opened on Saturday, October 4, 1997. Hundreds of onlookers joined the outdoor opening festivities in the afternoon and later that evening enjoyed a gala performance entitled "Home is Where the Heart Is" to mark the occasion. The production, created by dozens of local amateur and professional performers, traced the origin and growth of performing arts in Guelph with a series of dramatic and musical vignettes.

River Run Centre was conceived and built by the people of Guelph for the benefit of the community. Hundreds of volunteers were involved in feasibility studies, planning the building, choosing the architect, selecting the name and staging the opening. River Run Centre was named in 1997 through a public competition that attracted 2,260 entries. Stephen Norton of Guelph won the name competition.

Volunteers continue to play a vital role as ushers, technical assistants, tour guides, ticket takers and hosts for events. We salute the volunteers whose spirit illuminates the River Run Centre.
