Renowned big band performs at River Run Centre Thursday, March 23

GUELPH, ON March 9, 2017 – More than 60 years after the founding of the world-famous orchestra that bears his name, the music of Glenn Miller is alive and well. The big band’s decades-long tradition will continue when the Glenn Miller Orchestra performs at River Run Centre on Thursday, March 23, at 8 p.m. The Main Stage performance is presented as part of the Richardson GMP Music Series.

Featuring 19 musicians and singers who bring Glenn Miller’s unforgettable sound to life, the Glenn Miller Orchestra remains the most sought-after and celebrated big band in the world. As part of a can’t-miss show for jazz and swing fans, the ensemble will serenade its Guelph audience with classics including Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, Chattanooga Choo Choo and Tuxedo Junction.

“The ensemble is as solid as ever, recording-quality first rate,” All About Jazz said in a review of the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

While the legendary Glenn Miller is celebrated as the most successful dance bandleader of the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s, the present-day Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956. The band has been touring consistently ever since, performing an average of 300 live shows around the world each year in North America, Europe, South and Central America, as well as countries including Australia, Japan, Iceland and New Zealand. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is owned and operated by Glenn Miller Productions, under license from Miller’s estate.

During his illustrious career, Miller shared the stage with performers including Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Bing Crosby and Gene Krupa. Under Miller’s leadership, his band enjoyed record-breaking record sales and unprecedented attendance at live performances. Miller died at the height of his popularity in 1944, when a military flight he was travelling on from London to Paris went down over the English Channel.

“A band ought to have a sound all of its own,” Miller once said. “It ought to have a personality.” Today’s Glenn Miller Orchestra continues to offer those qualities.

Tickets to see the Glenn Miller Orchestra cost $52 for adults and $50 for seniors and students. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID. $5 eyeGO tickets are available to high school students with valid ID.
