About Contemporary Dance
Contemporary dance is much like abstract art. Let your mind open up and accept what may come in terms of your own ideas and feelings.
You don’t need to “get” anything specific. Contemporary art often suggests emotions or ideas or a story line, and leaves lots of space for the audience to put in their own interpretations.
About The Chrysalis Project
Connecting the growth cycle of humans and creatures to that of our planet, this artwork uses the guiding metaphor of the butterfly’s metamorphosis to insist on the astonishing similarity of patterns across all three systems. The abrupt changes, the outgrowing, the spinning, the self-degradation, moulting, and the pushing against what was once an enclosing cocoon—all assert the radical strangeness of transformation at the same time as they explore the rightness and fragility of evolutionary change. The Chrysalis Project is fascinated by the beauty & wonderment of this metamorphosis and the cyclical patterns revealed.
The Chrysalis Project is made up of a multi-generational cast of 44 dancers which features dance greats, Jasmin McGraw, Megan O’Donnell, Kelly Steadman and Lynette Segal. The Chrysalis Project also includes guest dancers from the Guelph Youth Dance Companies, the breathtaking photography of Dean Palmer and innovative costume design by Emma Wardell.
