A performance to never forget

Through the Eyes of a Friend: The World of Anne Frank performed at River Run Centre October 30

GUELPH, ON October 16, 2015 – Canadians have long valued their responsibility to never forget the atrocities of the Holocaust. Through the Eyes of a Friend: The World of Anne Frank helps audiences remember. The play will be performed in Co-operators Hall at River Run Centre on Friday, October 30, at 8 p.m. as part of the RBC Showcase Series.

A poignant tale of friendship and survival, Through The Eyes of a Friend is told from the view of Sarah Weis, the fictional best friend of Anne Frank. Recognized as a breakthrough educational production, the play encourages audiences to discover their personal awareness of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination through the lens of the Holocaust.

“Most dramatizations of the life of Anne Frank centre on her diary,” the New York Times wrote in a review of the production. “Through the Eyes of a Friend: The World of Anne Frank focuses instead on the vanishing community Anne left and the frightening one she travelled to after her years in an Amsterdam attic.”

In Amsterdam, Sarah meets Anne, a girl her own age whose family also escaped Germany. The two are soon inseparable friends. Sarah dreams of becoming an artist, as Anne a writer, and the girls pursue their passions together. But war looms over their childhood. When Anne and Sarah are 11 years old, the Nazis invade Holland and both girls are sent to German prison camps.

A multi-media experience that brings the reality of the Holocaust into focus, Through the Eyes of a Friend: The World of Anne Frank offers a poignant, meaningful remembrance of the horrors of the past in the hope they will never be repeated again. The play is a Theatreworks USA presentation of a Living Voices Production.
