“Thomas Edison of entertainers” performs musical comedy Sunday, January 17

GUELPH, ON January 5, 2016 – River Run Centre will present an afternoon of inventive musical comedy with “the Thomas Edison of entertainers” when Al Simmons performs on the Main Stage Sunday, January 17, at 2 p.m. as part of the Guelph Mercury Family Series.

Hailed as a comedy chameleon, wizard of one-liners and creative genius, Simmons has won over a legion of fans around the world for his Vaudeville-inspired performances. Simmons’ unique routine features bizarre gadgets, wild costumes, witty songs and, of course, his trademark puns. It’s a one-of-a-kind show that adds up to fun for all ages.

“For those in search of the truly zany, the undisputed king is Al Simmons,” Maclean’s Magazine said in a review. “A lightning bolt of wonderful lunacy,” said the Toronto Star.

While famed for his live performances, Simmons has also released three musical comedy albums, 1995’s Something’s Fishy at Camp Wiganishie, 1997’s Celery Stalks at Midnight and 2005’s The Truck I Bought From Moe. Each of the recordings won Juno nominations and Parents’ Choice award honours, with Celery Stalks at Midnight claiming the Juno for Best Children’s Album. Simmons has also produced a DVD, Al Simmons in Your Living Room, featuring a collection of six musical comedy videos.

By combining comedy with song, dance and magic, Simmons pays tribute to the tradition of comedy greats like Danny Kaye, Spike Jones and Jimmy Durante. The result is a one-man variety show that features plenty of old-fashioned, good-natured fun. As Variety magazine put it: “You’ll be consumed by laughter when Al Simmons lets his zany comedy loose.”

Tickets to see Al Simmons start at $21 for adults and $17 for children 14 and under. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID. $5 eyeGO tickets are available to high school students with valid ID. Tickets can be purchased at River Run Centre box office, 35 Woolwich St. in Guelph, by calling 519-763-3000, or online at riverrun.ca/al-simmons.
