Alan Doyle’s upcoming show at River Run heading for sellout

January 12, 2015

Guelph, ON January 12, 2015 – Only a handful of seats remain for the upcoming performance by Great Big Sea frontman, Alan Doyle, at River Run Centre on Saturday, January 24 at 8 p.m. The concert is presented as part of the centre’s Richardson GMP Music Series and sponsored by Syngenta. Fans will have a chance to see the Newfoundland native perform hot on the heels of the release of his second solo album titled So Let’s Go, which launches January 20th. The video for the title track is already available online on YouTube. It’s had thousands of views, and is earning positive comments from fans eager to hear the whole album.

Something of a renaissance man, Doyle has earned accolades not only as a musician, but also as an actor, producer and newly minted best-selling author (for his memoir, Where I Belong). He is best known as the lead singer for Great Big Sea, one of Newfoundland’s most beloved musical exports. Doyle formed Great Big Sea in 1993 along with Sean McCann, Bob Hallett, and Darrell Power. The Petty Harbour native and his band mates fused traditional Newfoundland music with their own pop sensibilities. Their unique sound earned them loyal fans and great success. Their nine albums, double-disc hits retrospective, and two DVD releases have been declared Gold or Platinum and have sold a combined 1.2 million copies in Canada. A six-piece band will join Doyle for his solo engagement at the River Run Centre. They’ll perform Doyle’s solo tracks, as well as many Great Big Sea favourites.

“If there’s an over-arching theme on this record, it’s one of optimism…not that this is in contrast to my previous doom-laden songs!” laughs Doyle, who says So Let’s Go is freer than his previous solo record, 2012’s Boy On Bridge in the respect of being open to all influences. “On my last solo record I wanted to explore musical backyards of friends of mine in different parts of the musical world. It was as much a physical as a musical journey away from home. On So Let’s Go, folks will hear much more stuff from my backyard and all the traditional and Celtic influences I grew up with, married with the most contemporary collaborators out there.”

The spirit of Doyle’s new recording – and indeed, his ethos for life in general – can be summed up as follows: we’re lucky to be here, so let’s make the most of it. As an entertainer, he thrives on enthralling his audiences. “I always want people to have the greatest night of their life when the house lights go down,” he says.

Tickets for this performance start at $44 for adults, and $42 for students and seniors. $5 eyeGO tickets are available for high school students with valid ID. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID. Tickets are available at the River Run Box Office at 519-763-3000, or online at riverrun.ca/alan-doyle
