Boreal continues a wintertime tradition

December 6, 2019

Trio performs heartwarming ‘Songs for a Snowy Season’ shows at River Run Centre

GUELPH, ON December 6, 2019 – Guelph musicians Katherine Wheatley and Tannis Slimmon – along with new Boreal member Angie Nussey – welcome winter with outstanding harmonies, brilliant songwriting and beautiful lyrics during Songs for a Snowy Season at River Run Centre on Friday, December 20 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, December 21 at 2 p.m. The Co-operators Hall performances are presented as part of the Borealis Music Series.

Boreal’s seasonal concerts of original songs and holiday classics have become a tradition across Ontario for more than a decade, celebrating the coming of winter and beauty of the season. Change is in the air for the trio in 2019, with longtime member Jude Vadala stepping away from the stage, but continuing to compose and arrange for the group. Wheatley and Slimmon will be joined by their new bandmate, singer, pianist and songwriter Angie Nussey.

“I’d watched and admired Tannis and Katherine’s solo careers for many years… I’ve been discovering Jude’s musical brilliance through her songs and arrangements,” Nussey says. “To have the opportunity to be part of Boreal is like a dream come true.”

Warm, friendly and genuine, Boreal’s music conjures images Canadians fondly recognize: pine branches bending low, footprints in the snow, the quiet of winter and the sound of a slap shot off the boards. Boreal’s debut album, Winter’s Welcome, was released in 2014.

“Absolutely magical,” radio station CFRU 93.3 FM said of Boreal. “The gorgeous vocals… plus the sharing of anecdotes and laughter bring the wonder back to winter. You’ll be smiling about it for the rest of the season.”

As well as her work with Boreal, Wheatley is a successful solo singer-songwriter and a member of the eclectic musical group Betty and The Bobs. Recognized as one of Canada’s best roots music singers, Slimmon has enjoyed a career spanning 30 years and was named contemporary vocalist of the year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2008. Nussey joins as an award winning artist, producer and songwriter.

Tickets to see Boreal’s Songs for a Snowy Season cost $30 for adults, $28 for seniors, and $25 for those under 30. Everyone must have a ticket, including infants and children.
