Celebrated singer-songwriter performs on Main Stage February 26

GUELPH, ON February 10, 2016 – Over a nearly five-decade career, Bruce Cockburn has proven one of the most influential and prolific singer-songwriters of his generation. The award‐winning Canadian artist will perform in Guelph Friday, February 26, at 8 p.m. as part of the Richardson GMP Music Series.

From his first solo performance at the Mariposa Folk Festival in 1968, Cockburn launched a career that has seen him release more than 30 albums, win 12 Juno Awards and named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Revered by fans and fellow musicians for his exceptional songwriting and captivating live performances, Cockburn’s music blends folk, blues, jazz and rock in songs that capture the essence of human experience.

“His music is entertaining, but often with a deep message intertwined into the lyrics, bringing a level of art and soul into his songs that makes them both captivating and timeless in nature,” said Matt Warnock of Guitar International magazine.

Well-known for songs including If a Tree Falls, If I Had a Rocket Launcher, Lovers in a Dangerous Time and Wondering Where the Lions Are, Cockburn’s recordings have sold more than seven million copies around the world. He has used his success in music to shine a light on causes including First Nations rights, environmental issues, Third World debt and the dangers of land mines in war-torn countries.

Among Cockburn’s recent projects are the written memoir and nine-disc box set collection Rumours of Glory, as well as his 31st album, Small Source of Comfort, a collection of songs featuring romance, protest and spiritual discovery. Compositions on the recording were inspired by Cockburn’s many travels, including to Canadian Forces Base Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Celebrated in Canada and around the world, Cockburn’s lengthy list of honours and achievements also include induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, a SOCAN lifetime achievement award and accolades from the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
