Canada’s Ballet Jörgen brings acclaimed production Coppélia to River Run Centre Sunday, January 20

GUELPH, ON January 7, 2019 – Experience daring, bold and captivating ballet when Canada’s Ballet Jörgen brings its acclaimed production Coppélia to River Run Centre on Sunday, January 20, at 2 p.m. The Main Stage performance is presented as part of River Run Centre’s Showcase Series.

First performed in 1870, Coppélia is one of the world’s oldest ballets. Renowned as a “comedy with love,” the ballet takes audiences into the mysterious mind of Dr. Coppélius, a lonely and disillusioned toymaker who wishes he could bring his creations to life. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen’s production of Coppélia features emotional, fantastical storytelling presented through original choreography by Bengt Jörgen, the company’s co-founder and artistic director.

“The entire Jörgen company fills the stage with such exquisite life you are swept along for an entertaining ride,” the Hamilton Spectator said in a review.

Coppélia’s comedic wonder ensues after Dr. Coppélius creates Coppélia, a stunning, life-sized dancing doll. The story’s beauty and humour develop quickly as Nathanael — one of the local villagers — falls madly in love with the doll and his sweetheart, Klara, moves to enact revenge. Coppélia features music by Léo Delibes, costume design by Gary Dahms and set and lighting design by Glenn Davidson.

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen stages 120 performances each year, reaching more than 50,000 people in urban and rural communities across Canada and the northern United States. Inspiring and connecting Canadians for more than a quarter century, the company makes ballet and Canadian choreography a meaningful part of performance, education and community engagement.

Tickets to see Coppélia by Canada’s Ballet Jörgen cost $45 for adults, $43 for seniors and students, and $25 for children 14 and under. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID. $5 eyeGO tickets are available to high school students with valid ID.
