Acclaimed five-member group performs at River Run Centre Thursday, October 18

GUELPH, ON October 4, 2018 – Lúnasa’s inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves have taken Irish acoustic music into celebrated new territory. Find out why the internationally acclaimed five-member group is known as one of the finest traditional Irish bands on the planet when Lúnasa performs at River Run Centre on Thursday, October 18, at 8 p.m. The Main Stage performance is presented as part of the Richardson GMP Music Series.

Composed of Kevin Crawford on flutes, low whistles and tin whistles, Trevor Hutchinson on double bass, Ed Boyd on guitar, Colin Farrell on fiddle and low whistle, and Cillian Vallely on uilleann pipes and low whistles, Lúnasa is renowned for stunning performances and superb musicianship. The band has performed more than 1,500 concerts in 36 countries since forming in 1997.

“Maintaining the unique, intimate qualities of a musical tradition while at the same time meeting and fulfilling the demands of the contemporary music world is a difficult juxtaposition to achieve. Lúnasa has managed to accomplish exactly that,” legendary Irish fiddler Kevin Burke says of Lúnasa.

During late August and early September, Lúnasa was in Europe for concert dates in Denmark, France and Belgium. The band has also appeared at internationally renowned venues including the Hollywood Bowl, National Concert Hall in Dublin, Sydney Opera House and Moscow International House of Music. Lúnasa’s diverse catalogue of seven studio albums includes the group’s latest offering, 2018’s Cas, its first recording to include vocalists. Natalie Merchant, Eric Bibb, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tim O’Brien and Daoirí Farrell are featured on the album.

“Thankfully, the huge melting pot of music that exists within the Irish tradition allows us to seek out exciting and unexplored melodies that work for a band like ours,” Crawford says. “This, combined with newer self-composed pieces and strong belief in what we do, helps to keep both the band and the tradition very much alive.”

Tickets to see Lúnasa cost $45 for adults, $43 for seniors and students. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID. $5 eyeGO tickets are available to high school students with valid ID. Tickets can be purchased at River Run Centre box office, 35 Woolwich St. in Guelph, by calling 519-763-3000, or online at riverrun.ca/lunasa.
