Talented kids perform pop music hits at River Run Centre Saturday, February 18

GUELPH, ON February 3, 2017 – When Raina Harten performs as a Mini Pop Kid, she knows she’s carrying on a proud tradition of talented kids creating family-friendly music.

“I wanted to be a Mini Pop Kid since I was really young and used to listen to their albums as a kid,” the 13-year-old says. “It feels great to perform and being a part of it is unbelievable. It’s something I always wanted to do.”

A singer, dancer and actor, Harten will be joined by her talented Mini Pop co-performers, as well as 25 members of two local dance studios, when Mini Pop Kids take the stage at River Run Centre on Saturday, February 18, at 2 p.m. The Main Stage performance is presented as part of the Miijidaa Family Series.

Packed with positive energy, the Mini Pop Kids encourage and empower children to be confident and shoot for their dreams. Performing family-friendly versions of current pop songs, the Mini Pop Kids get their audiences singing, dancing and having a great time together.

“We like to talk to the audience and get them up on their feet,” Harten says.

Launched during the 1980s, the original Minipops featured talented children between the ages of nine and 15 singing pop hits of the day as part of a chart-topping album series by K-tel. Minipops sold millions of albums in Canada, Australia, France, the United Kingdom and United States, with songs including Video Killed The Radio Star, Rock This Town and Cruel Summer.

The Mini Pop Kids have carried on the Minipops tradition since 2004, the year K-tel re-launched the brand. Since then, the Mini Pop Kids have released 11 albums, including multiple gold records and best sellers on iTunes and Amazon. In total, the new Mini Pop Kids have sold 300,000 records in Canada, with children, parents and teachers welcoming the group into their homes and classrooms.

A Mini Pop Kid for three years, Harten has recorded three albums with the Mini Pop Kids. The teen leads a busy life balancing rehearsals, school and friends, but she says being a Mini Pop Kid helped her burst out of her shell and develop her talents.

“This has helped me grow on stage and in my performances,” Harten says. “It’s exciting to be a part of.”

The Mini Pop Kids will be joined on stage by members of Guelph’s Emotion Dance Company and Kitchener’s Dimensions In Dance during their River Run Centre performance.
