A solo dance performance centred on togetherness and the slippage of memory
GUELPH, ON October 1, 2025 — Dancer and choreographer Heidi Strauss created between me and you out of a curiosity about the changing relationship between mind and body, as she experienced the onset of her mother’s dementia. Strauss fully immerses herself in the performance and invites audiences to do the same. Co-presented with Guelph Dance as part of River Run Centre’s dance series, this equally intimate and engaging show comes to the Studio Theatre on Friday, October 24 at 8 p.m.
Strauss operates both in front of the audience as a skilled dancer and performer and behind the scenes as choreographer and Artistic Director of adelheid, a dance company whose work focuses on “human contact, interaction, and the environment we find ourselves within.” She has won multiple Dora Mavor Moore Awards for her work, as well as the highly respected KM Hunter Award, and has toured and taught internationally. Strauss is also artistic lead at Dance Arts, formerly the School of Toronto Dance Theatre.
between me and you was developed in residency at the Citadel + Compagnie, housed at Toronto’s Citadel Ross Centre for Dance. As Strauss describes it, this solo work plays with the fragmentation of memory, the complexities of human understanding, and what happens when we ask for help.
In this solo dance work that involves text and gentle audience participation, Strauss invites the audience in by relaying personal anecdotes and commenting on history. This evolves into a physical play of the performer in different states, from instability to humour to surprise. She offers a commentary on the inconsistency of memory and the importance of listening to ourselves and each other.
Of her solo work, Canadian writer and editor Bev Daurio says, “Strauss has a rare capacity for melding the present, the philosophical, and the personal in an entertaining, moving, impelling and thought-provoking hybrid of writing, dance and theatre.”
between me and you features lighting design by Rebecca Picherack, and composition and projection by Jeremy Mimnagh. This production is supported through the Citadel’s Incubator Residency and the Lindy Green Family Foundation, and at River Run Centre by 25/26 Season Sponsor Richardson Wealth.
