Canadian crooner, former member of a cappella group The Nylons performs April 6

GUELPH ON March 23, 2018 – A treasured voice on the Canadian music scene for decades, Canadian crooner Micah Barnes will bring his silky jazz stylings to River Run Centre on Friday, April 6, at 8 p.m. The Co-operators Hall performance is presented as part of the Borealis Music Series; celebrating the strength and diversity of Canadian musicians.

After cutting his teeth in the cabarets and jazz clubs of Toronto, Barnes rose to fame on the global music scene as a member of the a cappella pop group The Nylons. A return to jazz-oriented songwriting during recent years has seen him called an “artist to watch” by Rolling Stone magazine.

“A highly personal singer-songwriter with a strong jazz sensibility,” the Montreal Mirror says of Barnes.

Barnes’ latest recording, New York Stories, is a collection of romantic original songs inspired by New York’s rich musical history, as well as Barnes’ own romance in “the city that never sleeps.” The album’s first single, New York Story, shot to the top of jazz charts in both Canada and the U.S., leading to Barnes being named Best Jazz Act at the Toronto Indie Awards.

Barnes’ River Run Centre performance will take the audience on a musical tour of the Big Apple, starting at the Apollo Theater and Cotton Club, moving on to Times Square and Broadway, eventually landing in Greenwich Village jazz clubs including the Blue Note and Birdland. As well as his own music, Barnes will showcase beloved songs from the world of Broadway, jazz and doo wop, including works by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington. He will be joined on stage by keyboard player David Restivo, bassist Russ Boswell and drummer Al Cross.

We would like to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario.

Tickets to see Micah Barnes cost $29 for adults, $27 for seniors and students. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID. $5 eyeGO tickets are available to high school students with valid ID.
