River Run announces 2014-15 season of shows

WOW! Headline acts all season – from big-name musical stars to top-drawer comedians and family favourites.

Guelph, Ontario May 27, 2014 – River Run Centre launched its 2014-2015 season of professional entertainment today at a public announcement and celebration.

“We’ve put the WOW into this season with signature headline acts featured prominently in each of the six series,” said River Run Manager Danna Evans in her opening comments. She also announced the launch of River Run’s new website and In the Spotlight, a new monthly e-newsletter.

The lineup for the Guelph Mercury Family Series features four imaginative and whimsical shows. The series opens on October 18 with Stella, Queen of the Snow, a new stage production by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, Canada’s acclaimed puppetry theatre for family audiences. To spark the holiday spirit, DuffleBag Theatre brings its quirky version of A Christmas Carol to the stage on December 14. The popular Velveteen Rabbit story comes to life through dance with Canada’s Ballet Jörgen on January 18. The series ends on April 12 with Canada’s beloved children’s entertainer, Fred Penner.

The Richardson GMP Music Series offers a full spectrum of musical headline acts, opening on November 2 with the celebrated Jim Cuddy Band. On November 28 Ian Thomas, Marc Jordan, Cindy Church and Murray McLauchlan bring their Lunch at Allen’s show to the stage. The always popular Barra MacNeils start the holiday season with a Christmas show on December 12, followed by Andrew Craig’s Gospel Christmas on December 13. Musical wizard Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea performs his solo show on January 24. Gifted singer-songwriter Sarah Slean takes the stage with her band on February 13. Sweet Dreams – A Tribute to Patsy Cline starring Leisa Way and featuring the Wayward Wind Band offers a trip down memory lane on February 21. On February 28, Canada’s musical superstar and gregarious stage performer, Jann Arden plays River Run for the first time. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is set to bring audiences to their feet on March 15 with the toe-tapping sounds of traditional New Orleans jazz. The talented songstress, Chantal Kreviazuk returns to River Run by popular demand on April 10 to close the series.

This year’s Wooly Kinderconcerts feature music and stories from familiar classical operatic and ballet hits performed by members of the Guelph Symphony Orchestra for children five years old and under. The Saturday morning series includes highlights from The Nutcracker on November 22, Hansel and Gretel on February 21 and Cinderella on April 11.

The RBC Showcase Series features four headline acts, beginning with the The Official Blue Brothers™ Revue, produced by Dan Aykroyd, Judith Belushi and music director Paul Shaffer on October 19. For magic lovers, Outerbridge Clockwork Mysteries by Canada’s grand masters of illusion is a must see on October 26. Marking the company’s first appearance at River Run, the renowned Toronto Dance Theatre performs a set of new contemporary works, A Rare Mix, on January 30. The series ends on March 22 with one of the world‘s most celebrated choral groups, The Vienna Boys Choir.

Talented Canadian singer-songwriters headline five intimate Friday night performances as part of the Borealis Music Series. Justin Hines, highly regarded for his musical prowess and commitment to international charitable work, returns to Guelph to open the series on October 17. Ennis, the family musical duo from Newfoundland and East Coast Music Award winner performs on November 14. Virtuoso guitarist Johannes Linstead returns to River Run on January 23. Halifax songbird Jenn Grant, known for her electric stage presence and regarded as a major emerging Canadian talent performs for the first time in a River Run season on February 27. Guelph’s own award winning singer-songwriter, Tannis Slimmon wraps up the series on April 10.

This season’s Guelph Infiniti Comedy Series showcases two returning comedy favourites and welcomes two comedic heavy-hitters to River Run for the first time. The multi-talented Canadian comedian Shaun Majumder – best known for his appearances on This Hour Has 22 Minutes – opens the series on October 17. The Second City returns by popular demand with a new show, The Meme-ing of Life, on January 23. Veterans of SNL: Rob Schneider, Tim Meadows and Chris Kattan, stars of the famed Saturday Night Live comedy and sketch television show, mark their River Run debut, on February 15. The series closes with the return of the popular annual Just for Laughs Road Show on April 16.

Tickets are now on sale through the River Run Centre box office. A 30% Early Bird Discount is available until August 31, 2014 to anyone purchasing a package of four or more shows selected from the season line up. Tickets for Jann Arden go on sale on October 1st and are not included in the Early Bird Discount. As part of the uGO program, tickets for university and college students are $20 each and through the eyeGO program, high school students may attend for just $5 each. Tickets may be purchased online at riverrun.ca, by phone at 519-763-3000 or in person at the Box Office from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
