River Run announces season of “Performances that Pop”

Guelph, ON May 20, 2015 – River Run Centre launched its 2015-2016 season of professional entertainment today at a public announcement and celebration.

“We’ve put the POP into this season with six different series, featuring a variety of headline acts,” said River Run Manager Danna Evans in her opening comments. She noted the special perks for subscribers to In the Spotlight, River Run’s monthly e-newsletter and also drew attention to the new benefits for those who take advantage of the new Pack-it-up savings feature.

The lineup for the Guelph Mercury Family Series features popular children’s entertainers and beloved storybook characters. The series opens on November 8 with Canadian musical duo Splash’N Boots. Al Simmons brings his bizarre gadgets, wild costumes and witty songs to the stage on January 17. In Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, the famously mischievous tomcat is brought to life in a theatrical production by Childsplay on February 20. Two Beans Productions tells the story of Alexander Who’s Not Not Not Not Not Not Going to Move on March 13, to close the series.

The Richardson GMP Music Series offers a full spectrum of musical acts. The series opens on October 29 with a not-to-be-missed double bill Jully Black and Jarvis Church. Iconic Canadian songwriter Jimmy Rankin will wow the audience with a solo performance on November 6. Colm Wilkinson, one of Broadway’s biggest voices will be joined on stage, December 4, by two female vocalists and a seven-piece band. Guitar virtuoso Jesse Cook and his band will keep fans tapping their toes throughout the night on December 11. Ring in the holiday season with the sweet sounds of A Quartette Christmas on December 18. Gord Bamford, a 19-time CCMA winner and reigning Male artist of the year, performs on January 22. Legendary singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn returns to Guelph on February 26. Maritime musician Matt Andersen February 27. The Leahys – In Song features five of the seven Leahy sisters and one of the four brothers April 2. Joel Plaskett with The Emergency  wraps up the series on April 29.

In this year’s Wooly Kinderconcerts, members of the Guelph Symphony Orchestra play samplings of works by great composers, providing the soundtrack for fun, interactive stories for children five years old and under. This Saturday morning series includes Goldilocks on November 7, Little Red Riding Hood on February 27 and Three Fabulous Little Pigs on April 9.

The RBC Showcase Series features five signature shows, beginning with Through the Eyes of a Friend: The World of Anne Frank a multi-media stage experience October 30. Everyone is invited to dress up like their favourite character and warm up their vocal chords for Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music December 27. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen tells the enchanting story of Sleeping Beauty January 23. Circus Incognitus, a one-man circus comedy, starring Jamie Adkins, takes the stage on February 21. The legendary Cape Breton coal miners choir Men of the Deeps close the series on April 10.

Talented Canadian singer-songwriters headline five intimate Friday night performances as part of the Borealis Music Series. Opening the series on October 16, The Kramdens mark their silver anniversary back on home turf. Multi-talented entertainer Amy Sky, November 20. Poet laureate of the folk and roots music world James Keelaghan January 15. Canadian Jazz pianist, vocalist and songwriter Laila Biali February 26. The series closes with The Devin Cuddy Band on April 8.

This season’s Comedy Series showcases three returning comedy favourites and welcomes a special comedic heavy-hitter for the first time. Headliner Howie Mandel opens the season on October 8 with his stand-up comedy chops. Ron James brings his side-splitting, kinetically charged performance to the stage on November 15. The man of a thousand voices André-Philippe Gagnon will enthrall the audience with his ability to impersonate the world’s best-known singers on February 13. The Just for Laughs Road Show returns with some of the best stand-up acts from Montreal’s legendary festival on April 9.
