Second City’s acclaimed The Meme-ing of Life comes to River Run

January 9, 2015

Guelph, ON January 9, 2015 –  The Meme-ing of Life is being hailed as one of the most popular and critically acclaimed productions of all time for Toronto’s legendary Second City. Guelph audiences will have the opportunity to take in the show, originally directed by Second City veteran Kerry Griffin, when the touring company makes a stop at the River Run Centre on Friday, January 23 at 8 p.m. This Main Stage performance is presented as part of the Guelph Infiniti Comedy Series.

The Second City has built a reputation for its biting social satire and boundless physical comedy. The Meme-ing of Life delivers on all fronts, leaving audiences howling in its wake. Like all great Second City works, the show’s writers surveyed the times in which they live, took stock of all that is funny, frustrating, absurd and even touching, and created a series of sketches that connect them all. From our online interconnectedness in the social media age, to gun control, to turf wars over seating on public transit, the show lampoons timely topics from contemporary life with humour and poignancy.

Critics on all fronts have given high praise for The Meme-ing of Life. The Globe & Mail reported that, “Second City’s latest show goes from big laughs to deep emotions…brilliant to watch.” It was given four out of four stars by Torontoist.com as well as The Toronto Star, with The Star calling it “the most deliciously subversive comic stealth bomb of a show that the company has created in many years.” NOW Magazine reported that The Meme-ing of Life is “one of the best-acted and directed shows in recent memory. It’s hard to top this one, which takes body language to a whole other level.”

The original Second City ensemble was established in Chicago in 1959. Since its inception Second City has spawned additional companies – including Toronto – as well as the legendary comedy series, SCTV. Second City is well known as a launch pad and training ground for some of the finest comedic talent, counting names such as Tina Fey, Mike Meyers and Steve Carell among its alumni.

Tickets for this performance start at $34 for adults, and $32 for students and seniors. $5 eyeGO tickets are available for high school students with valid ID. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID.
