Guelph, ON October 6, 2014 – River Run Centre’s family programming for the 2014 – 2015 season kicks off with a stage adaptation of the beloved illustrated story Stella, Queen of the Snow. Presented as part of the Guelph Mercury Family Series, the show is a production by Nova Scotia’s acclaimed children’s theatre company, Mermaid Theatre. This Main Stage performance takes place on Saturday, October 18 at 2:00 p.m. The one-hour presentation is perfect for young spectators aged three to seven.

Written and illustrated by award-winning author Marie-Louise Gay, Stella, Queen of the Snow was originally published in 2000. In the story Stella and her younger brother, Sam, spend a day exploring the snow. The forest, snowballs, snow angels and the mysterious white stuff itself provide fuel for Sam’s questions and Stella’s answers as they discover the world of winter together.

The story is brought to life with the signature Mermaid Theatre treatment, complete with adorable puppets, striking sets and original music. Mermaid Theatre has become a global ambassador for Canadian children’s literature and performing arts. The company has performed for five million spectators on four continents, bringing some of the most popular children’s stories to life with unique puppet theatre shows. Productions in their repertoire include The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favourites; Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon & The Runaway Bunny, and Sam McBratney and Anita Jeram’s Guess How Much I Love You.

Mermaid Theatre’s creative team is comprised of Jim Morrow as director and production designer; Steven Naylor as composer; and Nick Bottomley as projection and special effects designer. Marie-Louise Gay, the author and illustrator herself, provides the recorded narration for the show. Gay has published more than sixty titles and has earned a Governor General’s Award, the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award, and has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
