Mentorship program hosts free performances for National Youth Week

Guelph, ON April 19, 2018 – Guelph’s youth performers will showcase their talents in two different shows at River Run Centre on May 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. during National Youth Week. The shows are part of MusicWorks|StageWorks, a mentorship program presented by River Run Centre in partnership with Guelph Youth Council and sponsored by TD Bank Group. Now in its sixth year, the program offers youth, real-life experience in putting on a professional-style show, from concept development to performance. The two evening performances showcase close to 50 performers, from 14 different schools throughout Guelph and surrounding area. Artists will dazzle audiences with solo and duet routines featuring guitar, piano, ukulele, as well as group performances in modern dance, step dance, and even an a cappella set.

Members of River Run’s technical, programming and promotional staff have been working with participants in preparation for the shows. As part of the process, the performers have learned the essential elements of producing a show, such as, staging, flow, self-promotion, transitions and sound checks. This season the talented Guelph musician Nathan Coles joined the River Run team to mentor youth in the areas of stage presence and microphone techniques.

“We are always impressed by the level of talent and professionalism these youth performers demonstrate,” says Bill Nuhn, Manager – Theatres and Civic Events. “They’ve worked hard in preparation for these shows and we are thrilled to offer this unique opportunity with the support of TD Bank Group.”

Admission is free to each performance. Seating is general and on a first come basis.

Guelph Youth Council is a group of local volunteers (ages 13-19) that aims to preserve and enhance youth culture in the community. The group serves as liaison to City Council, offers leadership training, plans youth-based activities, and advocates on behalf of youth.

National Youth Week, running May 1 – 7 every year, is dedicated to the celebration of youth and their active participation and contributions in their community. Whether it is recreation, drama, sport, dance, civic engagement, art, volunteerism or leadership, every day young people are involved in meaningful activities during their discretionary time. National Youth Week is a time to honour their involvement and to profile the issues, accomplishments, and diversity of youth, across Canada.
