Juno Award-winning jazz singer performs at River Run Centre Sunday, October 22nd

GUELPH, ON October 5, 2017 – Two-time Juno Award-winner Emilie-Claire Barlow says pursuing a career in music was always her only option. “I’ve always been a singer,” Barlow says. “I just knew that’s what I was, who I was and what I was always going to do.”

Continuing a storied career that has won her acclaim as one of Canada’s finest jazz singers and arrangers, Barlow will take the stage at River Run Centre on Sunday, October 22nd, at 8 p.m. The Main Stage performance is presented as part of the Richardson GMP Music Series.

Throughout 11 albums created over the past two decades, Barlow has proven both a unique vocal talent and musical risk-taker. Her interpretations of well-known compositions have won accolades from coast to coast and beyond. Along with her sextet, Barlow will perform songs from her most recent album, Clear Day as well as favourites from The Beat Goes On, Live in Tokyo and more during her River Run Centre performance.

“With this album, I’m reaching for something bigger, more challenging and more personal,” Barlow says of the 14-track recording.

While she counts Bobby McFerrin, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Kurt Elling, Sarah Vaughan and Joni Mitchell among her musical inspirations, it was Canadian jazz singer Holly Cole who first caught Barlow’s ear at a young age.

“She has a unique voice and there was a chemistry with her musicians,” Barlow says. “She takes a song and completely reimagines it, reinvents it. That’s what I do.”

With her music, Barlow has always aimed to take risks, not to imitate. It’s an approach that has won her praise from fans and critics alike.

Tickets to see Emilie-Claire Barlow cost $42 for adults and $40 for seniors and students. $20 uGO tickets are available to university and college students with valid ID. $5 eyeGO tickets are available to high school students with valid ID.
