Double-Double Duo blends traditional and contemporary with their instruments and musical repertoire for a one-of-a-kind performance! Kornel Wolak plays clarinet, with a special interest in Baroque compositions and increasing the clarinet repertoire. At the other end of the spectrum Michael Bridge performs a range of genres from classical to pop culture on his digital accordion. As Double-Double Duo they released their debut album ‘Rock Bach’ in 2015.

    Questions/ Suggested Discussion Points

Musical Transcription is the art taking music that was written for one instrument or group of instruments, and re-composing it for another instrumentation. Double-Double Duo often plays pieces that usually require a full orchestra, with only two people! They work together to figure out the most important parts of the piece, and how to sound like a large ensemble. First, they listen to the piece many times, and then start arranging it. Usually, they practice the piece while they are also slowly figuring out what notes to play, and deciding which instruments to use. This collaboration takes a lot of time; they often rehearse for 5-10 hours per week and have been playing together for five years.

Dr. Kornel Wolak is doing research at the University of Toronto at the Department of Speech Language Pathology. The laboratory places electrodes all over his head and measures how his tongue and lips move while he plays. This helps him understand what happens in his mouth while he is playing, and to solve technical problems by understand in detail what goes on. This is the first time that anyone in the world has done this research!
Here is a video about Kornel’s research:

Michael Bridge plays the acoustic accordion (traditional) and digital accordion (electric). The digital accordion is a new instrument (2013) which allows one performer to sound like a band or an entire orchestra! Everything he plays is live. Michael has won the Canadian championships of digital accordion twice, and has placed second at the world level.
