Guelph Chamber Choir African Sanctus

Presented by Guelph Chamber Choir:

David Fanshawe’s African Sanctus combines Western music with the music of Africa in one of the most exciting works or our time. From the Muslim call to worship to Sudanese love songs and the pounding drums of a war dance, Fanshawe’s recorded music from diverse African cultures is fused with powerful Western choral music, beautifully married to the alluring sounds of Africa.

The first half of the concert features Musical Postcards of Africa by noted Guelph musician and expressive arts therapist, Gary Diggins. Combining ancient sounds with modern sounds, Gary plays a range of acoustic and percussive instruments from Africa, painting a canvas of imaginative soundscapes together with members of Ondine Chorus and the Guelph Chamber Choir. Gary’s work with communities affected by genocide in Africa has transformed them through music. His musical collaborations have taken him to India, Israel, Europe, and throughout North America collaborating with artistic organizations ranging from Cirque du Soleil to Canadian composer R. Murray Schaffer.

Podium Talk titled “An introduction to Sonic Postcards: Gary Diggins plays and explores exotic instruments from Africa” begins on the Main Stage at 6:30 pm.
