Presented by Guelph Jazz Festival
Nova Scotia-born pianist, violinist, and composer, Marielle Groven, covers enormous musical and emotional territory in her practice, evoking stillness and poise as well as a quicksilver imagination and assertive, sweeping expression. These are traits that her partner, double-bassist (and Guelph native) Aaron Lumley, shares in spades. To animate and extend their music, they have invited the superb Dutch guitarist, Jasper Stadhouders. He will be playing acoustic guitar in Guelph to complete a compelling trio of acoustic stringed instruments played by three notable younger exponents.
This year marks a conjunction of two notable landmarks: the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Guelph Jazz Festival, and the sixtieth birthday of acclaimed Japanese pianist, Satoko Fujii. In Japanese culture, a sixtieth birthday is a major event, a transition into a new and joyful stage of life, and Fujii has opted to celebrate this passage with a monumental project, releasing twelve CDs during the twelve months of 2018. A notable one introduces This is It! with trumpeter Natsuki Tamura and drummer Takashi Itani.
