GJF: Randy Weston’s African Rhythms Trio

Presented by Guelph Jazz Festival:

Guelph Jazz Festival Promotional

A jazz legend comes to the Guelph Jazz Festival! Since bursting onto the New York scene in the 1950s, pianist Randy Weston has carved a unique place for himself in American music. One of the first to acknowledge the ideas of Thelonious Monk, and a collaborator with female jazz pioneer Melba Liston, he clearly had his own vision of where the music could go. In the 1960s, Weston moved to Morocco, and African music and culture has loomed large in his music ever since. In his African Rhythms Trio, with the great bass stylist Alex Blake and virtuoso African percussionist Neil Clarke, Weston presents his own definition of the power of jazz music: “Mother Africa’s way of surviving in the new world.”
