Presented by Guelph Jazz Festival:
Ernst Reijseger, Mola Sylla, Harmen Fraanje (Netherlands / Senegal)
Asked by his producer what he wanted to record next, the Dutch cello virtuoso Ernst Reijseger replied, “This trio is it, because I have found, completely by coincidence, this great pianist and this angel of a singer, that make me play differently and vice versa times three. It is a living organism, this trio. Not a concept. In fact its concepts change all the time. New approaches occur and are recognized by its members. No democracy, but sensitive cooperation.” With Harmen Fraanje (piano) and Mola Sylla (vocals, m’bira, xalam, kongoma), the trio has in different configurations recorded, toured Europe and South America, and in recent years devised soundtracks for the films of German director Werner Herzog.
Vijay Iyer Trio (USA)
Los Angeles Weekly has called pianist Vijay Iyer “a boundless and deeply important young star”; PoPMatters named his trio with Tyshawn Sorey drums and Stephan Crump bass “the best band in jazz.” Ayer’s new album Mutations, his 18th, documents his composing for chamber ensemble, and he recently commenced a permanent appointment as Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts at Harvard University. Widely-published as a writer on music and perception, his 2009 album Historicity was named Jazz Album of the Year by journals across the USA. Iyer’s festival appearance gives Guelph audiences the priceless chance to hear a teacher, scholar, composer and pianist whose trio “has the potential to alter the scope, ambition and language of jazz piano forever” (Jazzwise, UK).
