    Pre-show Information for Teachers

Students will have the extraordinary opportunity to see award-winning Canadian pianist, vocalist and songwriter Laila Biali perform live. Biali takes the best of pop, rock and soul, informs it with her knowledge of jazz and weaves it into her musical arrangements. She has toured the globe with major acts including Suzanne Vega, Sting, and Paula Cole.

While mainly known for her jazz performances, Laila Biali is expanding into more pop-oriented music, including her own compositions with her new album House of Many Rooms. This album includes a vast range of instruments, from gospel choir to brass quartet and string orchestra.

Laila Biali’s studio recording, Tracing Light, received a JUNO nomination for “2011 Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year”. She has also received awards for composing and keyboard playing. In addition to playing on her own, Biali is also a member of the all-female New York based neo-Classical quartet, Rose & the Nightingale, whose members have toured with Grammy award winner Esperanza Spalding.

    Questions/ Suggested Discussion Points

    1. Laila Biali is known for her inventive musical arrangements.
A musical arrangement is a reconceptualization of a previously composed piece of music. An arrangement may differ from the original work in terms of harmony, instrumentation (the actual instruments used), style (i.e., classical versus jazz), sequence (of introduction, verses, chorus and/ or repeated sections) or other variations.
    2. One of Laila Biali’s many accomplishments is being named “SOCAN Composer of the Year”.
SOCAN is the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada. It is a not-for-profit organization that represents the Canadian performing rights of millions of Canadian and international music creators and publishers. It distributes royalties to Canadian musicians for the use of their music around the world, and licenses Canadian businesses that use music (i.e., restaurants) so they have the freedom to use any music they want, legally and ethically.
    3. Liala Biali was recently the “Artist-in-Residence” at The Banff Centre. What is an artist-in residence and what are some activities in which they might be involved?
Artist-in-residence programs involve a creative person (such as a writer, musician, visual artist, etc.) in a place other than their usual environment for the purpose of reflection, research, presentation and/ or production (Wikipedia). There is no single program and parameters, expectations and funding vary greatly.
The City of Guelph’s Artist in Residence program started in 2014; this past year saw Greg Denton paint 100 portraits to celebrate the 100th anniversary of John McCrae’s In Flanders Field. Click here for more information on Guelph’s Artist in Residence program.
