Questions/ Suggested Discussion Points
Le Groupe Swing (LGS) was formed in 1999 by Michel Bénac, who was joined by Jean-Philippe Goulet in 2002. Their music is based on French-Canadian folks songs, transformed into urban music with influences from hip hop to techno. Traditional French-Canadian folk music has roots in music from France mixed with Celtic influences; instruments typically include fiddle, accordion and simple percussion. The traditional folk music is essentially functional – meant to accompany dancing such as quadrilles, the cotillion and jigs. Indeed, the ‘swing’ in LGS refers to dancing!
Le Groupe Swing has been nominated and won numerous awards, including a JUNO nomination for “French Album of the Year” (2009). What are the JUNO Awards?
The JUNO Awards were first presented as the RPM Gold Leaf Awards in 1964, and became The JUNO Awards in 1971. Named in tribute to Pierre Juneau, the first chairperson of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the JUNO Awards were founded to raise the public profile and recognition of musical artists in Canada.
LGS has also won a number of prix Trille Or from the Association des professionnels de la chanson et de la musique (APCM) and is nominated for two awards for 2018: Best Band, and Best Song for “La folie” (words & music by Michel Bénac, John Nathaniel). These awards are open to Franco-Canadian artists from everywhere in Canada. Ceremonies this May include a week of activities including workshops, concerts and culminating with the Gala awards presentation.
This presentation is made possible in part by a grant from the Ontario Arts Council’s Ontario Touring program.
