Celebrated Canada’s Ballet Jörgen production staged at River Run Centre January 21

GUELPH ON January 8, 2018 – Canada’s Ballet Jörgen will bring the magical and mysterious tale of Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia to life on River Run Centre’s Main Stage on Sunday, January 21, at 2 p.m. The performance is presented as part of the RBC Showcase Series.

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen’s current production of Anastasia will mark the 100th anniversary of Anastasia’s story and 10th anniversary of their original production of the celebrated ballet. The drama of a young girl born to privilege and cast into a world of immense challenge following the Russian Revolution serves as the basis of an extraordinary and gripping performance.

The mystery surrounding whether Anastasia – the teenage daughter of Russia’s last Tsar, Nicholas II – died with her family has fascinated the world for nearly a century. Books, movies and musicals have served to create a modern-day mythology surrounding her tragic story.

Anastasia explores the emotions, aspirations and affections of a lovable and controversial character as the world transforms around her during the summer of 1918. Created by Choreographer and Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen, the ballet is rich with detailed costumes, captivating sets and exquisite lighting. The production is set to an original orchestral score by Russian-Canadian Composer Ivan Barbotin.

“Anastasia is lyrical, attractive and accessible,” the Globe and Mail says of the production.

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen stages 120 performances each year, reaching more than 50,000 people in urban and rural communities across Canada and the northern United States. Inspiring and connecting Canadians for more than 25 years, the company makes ballet and Canadian choreography a meaningful part of performance, education and community engagement.
