Presented by Guelph Jazz Festival:
Barre Phillips (France)
Early in his career Barre Phillips was touring Europe for the first time when he had the opportunity to sit in with Coleman Hawkins. Hawkins liked his playing so much that when the two ran into each other in Holland, Hawkins (although he travelled so much that he couldn’t recall anyone’s name) demanded that Phillips replace his scheduled bassist. “Bass,” he told his disappointed Dutch sideman, “give your bass to Bass.” In the 1960s, Phillips made the south of France his home base for a musical career that has ranged all over Europe and North America, including recording with Ornette Coleman for the soundtrack of David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch. Barre Phillips solo concert will be a precious opportunity to hear the gorgeous tone and generous imagination of an improvising grand master.
