Presented By Guelph Jazz Festival:
Double-bill: Brodie West Quintet (Ontario) & Ingrid Laubrock, Tom Rainey & Hank Roberts (USA)
Toronto alto saxophonist Brodie West’s Quintet recording, “Clips”, is both his most achieved work and one of the best Canadian jazz records of 2018. West’s smart, varied composing blends quirky post-Coleman bebop chromatism, agitated rhythmic investigation, and the rough-hewn lyricism inspired by his work with The Ex and legendary Ethiopian tenorman, Getatchew Mekuria.
Saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey have collaborated together and separately with countless luminaries across the global field of creative music. They have added legendary cellist Hank Roberts, who came to prominence in the 1980s on JMT label recordings by, among others, Bill Frisell and Tim Berne, for a one-off gig in New York in July 2018.
