Presented by Guelph Jazz Festival:
GJF: Sun Ra Arkestra and Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie: Hymn to the Universe (Saturn/Ontario/Quebec)
Sun Ra, the visionary poet/philosopher of the jazz orchestra, has long since advanced to higher realms, but his musical work is continued by an ongoing Arkestra where the wisdom of longstanding members such as Charles Davis, John Ore, Vincent Chancey, and Danny Thompson is enhanced by the freshness and enthusiasm of a newer generation. In fact, “enthusiasm” is the keynote of the Arkestra: under the direction of the great alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, it has continued to spread its message of musical joy to audiences the world over. Upon the classic foundations of the jazz orchestra, the Arkestra builds a fantastic pyramid of rhythm, colour and virtuosity. It brings avant-garde jazz back down to the street and at the same time, out to the stars.
Founded in Quebec in 2000 by individually renowned dancers/choreographers Bill Coleman and Laurence Lemieux, Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie have collaborated with a wide variety of artists, including countertenor Daniel Taylor and contemporary composers Gordon Monahan and John Oswald. They have brought contemporary dance to places such as the Regent Park Project, the Ojibway of Heron Bay and the Pedahbun Lodge Residential Addiction Treatment Centre. “Hymn to the Universe” is their collaboration with Marshall Allen and the other performers of the spectacular Sun Ra Arkestra. To hear and see them is to realize why the Toronto Star wrote that “Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie is literally… taking dance to places it has never been before.”
