Dynamic conversation and passionate performance
GUELPH, ON April 9, 2026 — The Woven Ones is a powerful duo featuring award-winning singer-songwriter Chelsey June and renowned Inuvialuit and Dìne throat singer Nina Segalowitz. Together, they offer an evening of captivating music and storytelling honouring Indigenous matriarchs and women’s strength. Join the conversation and enjoy the performance — In Conversation with The Woven Ones takes place in River Run Centre’s Studio Theatre on Thursday, May 7 at 8 p.m.
Chelsey June is an award-winning singer-songwriter, author, and former lead singer of acclaimed folk act Twin Flames. June is now carving out a solo career that feels less like a reinvention and more like a reckoning, shaped by over a decade of experience.
June blends haunting vocals through arrangements that weave together folk, dark Americana, and modern textures. With her spirit flute and captive storytelling, she pulls listeners into something deeper than a concert. Her percussive style ties everything together, using an Indigenous hand drum and the bodhrán, mirroring the layered cultures of Canada: Indigenous roots grounded in the land and ancestries of French, Irish, and Scottish early settlers.
Nina Segalowitz is a traditional knowledge keeper, cultural consultant, and singer. For over two decades, she has given regal performances of throat singing, which has been a part of Indigenous cultures for thousands of years. Segalowitz has performed around the world with various groups and singers, including Ariane Moffat and Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
Passionate about her culture and bringing people together, Segalowitz is dedicated to fostering a better understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. “I try to be a bridge,” she explains. Celebrating and sharing her culture through music and storytelling is precisely what this show is all about.
This live, unscripted interview is hosted by Cameron Smillie, who has been hosting the “In Conversation” series for nine years. In between interview segments, June and Segalowitz each perform solo, and together as a duo. This is more than a conversation — it is a connection.
Part of River Run’s Miijidaa Music Series which features Indigenous artists, this show is supported by Series Sponsor Miijidaa Café + Bistro, Season Sponsor Richardson Wealth, Ontario Arts Council, SOCAN Foundation, and the Government of Canada.
