Presented by Guelph Jazz Festival
The landscape of Canadian creative improvised music would be very different without Casey Sokol’s towering influence. Through his work teaching improvisation in the York University Music Department over five decades, he taught hundreds of Canadian musicians and helped them to develop their skills and styles as improvisers. This commitment to pedagogy has often obscured Sokol’s tremendous talents as a performer, synthesising his command of classical and contemporary composed music techniques during his improvisations. He is a founding member of CCMC, dating back to the mid-seventies, and has maintained periodic performing activities ever since. His Guelph solo concert is his first engagement with Andrew Wedman’s Bass Piano.
